The purpose of the Mikey Powell Memorial Family Fund is to ensure that families or their campaign groups across the UK can get access to small grants to provide practical domestic assistance, to further the work of their own campaigns or assist them in engaging in other local, regional or national campaigns, events and initiatives. The Memorial Family Fund has been established in remembrance of Mikey Powell and acknowledges the work and campaigning of the late Pauline Campbell.

Funds will be available for:

  • Promotional materials (banners, t-shirts, badges, business cards etc)
  • For help with stationary, postal and related items or equipment
  • Help towards travel costs to events, inquests or conferences
  • Assistance towards the costs of counseling or therapy services
  • Support with essential household provisions and bills
  • Short holidays and family respite breaks

Coroner receives ‘significant’ information on the Birmingham pub bombings

A “significant” piece of information has been sent to the coroner who is considering reopening the Birmingham pub bombings inquests.

Senior coroner for Birmingham and Solihull Louise Hunt said she received “sensitive information” from an undisclosed source in a submission sent to her office on April 27, just days before a key hearing.

Speaking on Thursday ahead of what is due to be her final decision on whether to reopen the inquests on June 1, Ms Hunt added the material was “significant” and related to an allegation the security services had some advanced notice of the deadly bombings on the night of November 21 1974.

She said: “It’s significant and does raise concerns in relation to potential advanced notice. That’s as much as I can say.”

New book addresses controversial police powers and accountability

The recently released ‘Stop and Search: the Anatomy of a Police Power’ provides a compelling and well-rounded analysis of the issues around the power that daily allows officers to invade an individual’s privacy and to intrude into people’s liberty.

Academics and renowned criminologists have contributed to the book’s eight chapters, covering issues ranging from police racism and the economic case for stop and search to counter terrorism policing.

The book launch, hosted by the LSE on 26 November, saw discussions by Emeritus Professor Robert Reiner, Chief Superintendent Victor Olisa and the book’s editors and contributors.
