Inquest 2009
The inquest into the death of Mikey Powell commenced on 4th November 2009 after a long and difficult 6 year wait.
It was scheduled to run until 16th December 2009 at Sutton Coldfield Town Hall, Birmingham, West Midlands.
The family have vowed to see an end to deaths in custody!

Brief Background
The Friends of Mikey Powell Campaign for Justice was established by the family of Michael Lloyd Powell (known as Mikey), a cousin of the renowned poet and writer, Benjamin Zephaniah, following his death whilst in Police custody. Mikey was 38 years old and a father of three young children.
He was fit but had suffered several short episodes of mental illness from which he had recovered. One of these episodes occurred on 7th September 2003.
Mikey was detained outside his mother’s house in the Lozells area of Birmingham and taken to Thornhill Road Police station. He died at some point during his detention. The inquest Jury concluded that Mikey must have died on the floor of the police van…
Mikey was much loved and respected. He was 38 years old and the father of three young children.
